The South African wine industry has reached a significant new milestone, as Polyoak Packaging has become a strategic industry partner and brought to life, in collaboration with Stellenbosch Vineyards, the first Eco-Flat Wine Bottle, a lightweight, recyclable alternative to traditional glass that could reshape how South African wines are packaged, shipped, and sold.
The 750ml Eco-Flat Wine Bottle, manufactured at Polyoak’s world-class facility, uses Packamama’s patented flat-bottle design and is produced by Polypet, part of Polyoak Packaging. Weighing just 63 grams, the bottle is up to 80% lighter than traditional glass, enabling meaningful reductions in transport-related emissions while maintaining product integrity.
Why the wine industry needs sustainable packaging alternatives
As sustainability continues to shape global supply chains, wine producers are under increasing pressure to adopt packaging solutions that reduce environmental impact while maintaining product quality. This shift presents an opportunity for forward-thinking, customer-focused innovation that supports both commercial performance and environmental responsibility.
The Eco-Flat Wine Bottle offers a high-quality, locally manufactured solution that delivers a lower carbon footprint while preserving wine integrity. Produced using responsibly sourced recycled materials and supported by advanced barrier technology, the format provides a shelf life of up to two years, making it well-suited to all still wines for everyday enjoyment. This innovative approach reflects a collaborative effort to advance more efficient, responsible and scalable packaging solutions for the wine industry.
The Eco-Flat Wine Bottle offers a practical solution, delivering a lower carbon footprint than glass while maintaining wine integrity with an integrated oxygen barrier, making the format well suited to all still wines produced for everyday enjoyment.
How the Eco-Flat Wine Bottle is made
The Eco-Flat Wine Bottle is made from PET containing 25% recycled PET (rPET) plastic supplied by Safripol. By integrating locally sourced recycled content into wine packaging, Polyoak actively supports the development of a circular economy while creating sustained demand for post-consumer material, contributing to job creation across the recycling value chain.
The Eco-Flat Wine Bottle 100% recyclable, supporting the circular economy. The bottles are available in dead-leaf green and colourless formats, and they can be paired with a wide range of closure colours, offering flexibility for different wine styles and brand preferences.
Shelf impact: standing out where it matters
One of the most distinctive features of the eco-flat bottle is its shape. The iconic flat profile creates a larger front-facing visual footprint than a traditional round glass bottle, giving brands more room for label design and stronger visibility on retail shelves.
The design also doubles shelf capacity. Twice as many 750ml eco-flat bottles fit per shelf compared to standard six glass bottles, improving retail space utilisation for stores and giving wine producers more presence on the shop floor.
For brands competing in crowded retail environments, this combination of distinctive shape and increased shelf density is a significant commercial advantage.
Logistics and cost savings that add up
The flat design is not just about looks. It delivers meaningful logistics efficiencies that translate directly into cost savings and reduced emissions.
- 40% more space-efficient per pallet than traditional glass bottles
- Twelve 750ml bottles per case compared to six glass bottles in a standard case
- Cross-packing and flat-packing capability for streamlined storage and transport
- Up to 80% lighter than glass, reducing fuel consumption and transport costs
For South African wine producers who export, these efficiencies are particularly valuable. Lower shipping weight means lower freight costs per bottle, making South African wine more competitive in international markets.
New market opportunities for South African wine
Beyond sustainability and efficiency, the eco-flat bottle unlocks markets and occasions that glass cannot easily serve, including airlines as the flat shape fits snugly into in-flight trolleys, making it ideal for airline wine service where space and weight are critical factors. As well as online retail, the compact shape and shatterproof material make the bottle safe and easy to deliver, reducing breakage and packaging waste in e-commerce fulfilment. The bottle is also perfect for outdoor events and festivals. Concerts, sporting events, picnics, nature reserves, and festivals frequently ban glass for safety reasons. The eco-flat bottle gives wine producers access to these occasions for the first time.
The format has already gained traction in overseas markets, outselling glass in parts of Europe. Locally, research shows that 70% of South African millennials and female consumers are likely to purchase wine in this format, signalling strong consumer appetite for the innovation.
What this means for the future of wine packaging in South Africa
The introduction of the Eco-Flat Wine Bottle reflects Polyoak Packaging’s commitment to delivering best-quality, innovative and customer-focused solutions that support the long-term sustainability of the industries it serves.
By combining local manufacturing capability with forward-thinking design and responsible material use, Polyoak is enabling the South African wine industry to transition towards more efficient and sustainable packaging formats.
