Every year on Global Recycling Day, people, organisations and industries around the world pause to recognise the critical role recycling plays in protecting our planet. The day shines a spotlight on how recycled materials should be treated as valuable resources rather than waste. By rethinking how we use, reuse and recycle materials, we move closer to a circular economy that reduces environmental impact and conserves natural resources for future generations.
For companies in the packaging industry, this day carries even greater significance. At Polyoak, recycling forms an essential part of how we approach sustainable packaging. Plastics play an important role in protecting products, reducing food waste and enabling efficient transport. However, their long-term value depends on responsible design, collection and recycling. Global Recycling Day reminds us that every part of the value chain, from manufacturers to consumers, plays a role in closing the loop.
To mark the occasion, we spent the day engaging with plastic recycling experts to strengthen our understanding of South Africa’s recycling landscape. We hosted our industry partners from Polyco and Plastics SA at Polyoak’s Cape Town site to update our people on the status of South Africa’s waste, the latest recycling trends, and innovative projects currently in the pipeline.
Their insights helped unpack how the recycling ecosystem functions in South Africa, from waste collection and sorting to the development of new end-use markets for recycled materials. More importantly, the discussion sparked meaningful conversations among our teams about how we can continue designing packaging that supports recycling and strengthens the circular economy.

Our staff had an absolute blast celebrating with Binnie, our infamous recycling and sustainability mascot!
As the old African proverb goes: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” Polyoak focuses on ensuring our plastic packaging is sustainable for the long-term. We couldn’t ask for better partners on this journey.
Recycling continues to play a vital role in South Africa’s economy and society. Here are a few important facts about the country’s recycling landscape. According to Plastics SA:
- For 2024, total plastics recycled increased to approximately 471,000 tonnes, continuing a steady upward trend.
- Around 46% of locally manufactured plastic packaging is recycled, reinforcing South Africa’s position as a global leader in plastics recycling.
- The recycling sector supported approximately 95,900 income-generating opportunities in 2023, including a large informal network of waste reclaimers.
- Recycled content now makes up about 22% of plastics used in new products, up from just 16% a decade ago.
- The use of recycled plastic in new products has grown significantly, with recyclate usage increasing by over 67% between 2014 and 2024.
Days like Global Recycling Day remind us that recycling does not happen in isolation. It relies on cooperation across communities, business and government. When manufacturers design recyclable packaging, when industry support recycling infrastructure, and when citizens separate their waste responsibly, the entire system becomes stronger.
We believe responsible packaging starts with thoughtful design and continues throughout the product lifecycle. By supporting recycling initiatives and collaborating with organisations such as Polyco and Plastics SA, we collectively contribute to building a cleaner, more productive South Africa.
Tips for better recycling
Recycling works best when everyone participates. As citizens, there are simple actions we can take to make a real difference:
- Separate recyclable materials from general waste at home.
- Rinse and clean containers before placing them in recycling bins.
- Learn which items are recyclable in your area.
- Support brands and products that prioritise recyclable packaging.
- Encourage recycling in your community, workplace or school.
Every bottle, jar or container recycled represents a resource saved and a step toward a circular economy. On Global Recycling Day and every day after, small actions add up to meaningful change.
Together, we can ensure that valuable materials stay in circulation and continue creating value for people, industry and the planet.
