Celebrating 10 years of community clean-up's
Polyoak Cape Town Family Beach Clean-Up at Strandfontein Pavillion.

Polyoak Packaging launched its first Polyoak Clean-Up in 2014, where employees and their family volunteer to remove litter from the local
communities in which it operates across South Africa. This year was extra special as Polyoak commemorated 10 years of clean-up’s with an impressive,
record-breaking turnout of volunteers and the removal of over 3 tonnes of litter.

“We never dreamed that this seedling idea would grow organically and blossom into the impactful national campaign, it is today, supported by hundreds of Polyoak employees and family. We are delighted with this year’s impact!”

Michelle Penlington (National Executive Sustainability, Polyoak Packaging)

In addition to cleaning up the environment, Polyoak collaborated with various local organisations to help reclaim what can be recycled from all the litter collected. This helps to drive the circular economy. Throughout September 948 Polyoak volunteers collected 483 bags of litter weighing 3,386 kilograms, at sites including Victoria Bay, Strandfontein Beach and Beachwood Mangroves Nature Reserveto help preserve coastal and natural estuarine ecosystems.

The items collected ranged from polystyrene, LDPE bags, glass alcohol bottles, cigarette butts, and fishing lines to name a few. PET bottles and closures were also found, despite being 100% recyclable. This highlights the need for consumers to separate their waste and place their recyclables in the appropriate bins, to ensure they get recycled. Bottle caps should always be replaced onto the bottle before disposing for recycling!
